KINGSPORT, Tenn.Holston Medical Group (HMG) president and women’s health advocate Scott R. Fowler, MD, kicked-off the 2011 Komen Tri-Cities’ Grant Reception held Thursday, April 14 at the VO Dobbins Non-Profit Center, Kingsport.  Fowler is honored to be a Komen Tri-Cities “pink tie guy”, a community leader dedicated to creating awareness, inspiring involvement and encouraging compassion.

By wearing the pink tie throughout the year and at Komen Tri-Cities’ events, “pink tie guys” serve in the role of advancing the promise of ending breast cancer forever, speaking out at designated events and reminding individuals to do everything possible to find a cure.

“As a women’s health specialist, I love the vision of Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” began Fowler.  “A world without breast cancer.  Indeed, it’s an incredible vision. And, what’s most encouraging is that it’s  not some sort of “pie in the sky idea” that simply looks impressive on corporate letterhead.  It’s a real vision.”

During his speech to kick-off the 2011 Grant Reception, where community medical organizations receive Komen grant monies for breast cancer awareness and research, Fowler reminded those in attendance of the 25-year impact of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an organization with the vision of investing an additional $1 billion over the next decade.

In the Tri-Cities alone, Komen has raised more than $1.6 million since October 2005 when the Tri-Cities’ affiliate was established.

Following Fowler’s introductory remarks, Komen awarded a combined total of $344,000 in grants to promote breast cancer awareness, treatment and research in our immediate service area during 2011.

“On behalf of everyone at Holston Medical Group, it is my privilege to say ‘thank you,’” concluded Fowler.  “We’re confident you will use the funds well, investing in the lives of those we love.”
