What is a Digital Mammogram?
Digital mammogram takes an electronic X-ray image of the breast and stores it directly in a computer. The image produced is used to find tumors and to help tell the difference between non-cancerous (benign) and cancerous (malignant) disease.
What are the benefits of Digital Mammogram?
Digital mammography uses less radiation than film mammography. Digital mammography allows improvement in image storage and transmission because images can be stored and sent electronically. Radiologists also can use software to help interpret digital mammograms.
What an you expect during a mammogram?
You will be asked to undress from the waist up and will be given a gown to wear. Depending up on the type of equipment used, you will sit or stand.
One breast at a time will be rested on a flat surface that contains the x-ray plate. A device called a compressor will be pressed firmly against the breast to help flatten out the breast tissue.
The X-ray pictures will be taken from several angles. You may be asked to hold your breath as each picture is taken.
Compression during mammogram
You may feel slightly uncomfortable during your mammogram because of breast compression. We apologize if it is uncomfortable. We want the most accurate pictures possible of your breast tissue.
Compression of the breasts is necessary during a mammogram. Compression of breasts, while briefly uncomfortable for you, helps take clearer pictures of your breasts with less radiation. Flattening of the tissues is necessary for you to have the best exam possible.
Compression is not dangerous to the breasts and does not produce long-term discomfort. If you notice that the compression has caused some temporary discoloration of one or both of your breasts, do not be alarmed. Your breasts may also be sore and tender for several days. If your breasts ache, you can take acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin for the discomfort.
If you experience any other problems or have any questions about your mammogram, please call our office. We appreciate the opportunity to serve as your breast health provider.
